Introducing Hutano, Closing the Racial Gap in Healthcare

We are so proud of the hard work put in by web team building a new bespoke website for Black and brown skin community health brand, Hutano!

Hutano was created to empower, educate and provide a voice through their unique community platform for showcasing and discussing clinical signs of diseases on Black and brown skin.

We created a custom platform for this important community to share individual experiences, offer advice and raise awareness. This site is built on a custom community platform giving users the tools to share, connect, start discussions - as well as a host of other features you would expect from a traditional social network. From the admin side, there are extensive tools and features to curate topics and keep the community secure and sage. The site also has as supporting marketing website to attract new sign ups, which is built on the popular WordPress CMS and includes a branded administration dashboard.

Meet Malone

Over the last few months, the founder of Hutano, Malone Mukwende, has been spreading the word to help others understand that race plays an important part when providing patients with the proper care.

The conversation around race has evolved into an essential and public topic. Prominent Hollywood actors with large platforms have begun to amplify voices with messages like Malone. In June 2021, Angelina Jolie interviewed Malone after experiencing medical issues with her children she felt weren't being treated correctly:

"I have children from different backgrounds, and I know when there was a rash that everybody got, it looked drastically different depending on their skin colour," she explained. "But whenever I looked at medical charts, the reference point was always white skin."

She then shared an anecdote about what took place last year when her eldest daughter, Zahara, who is Black, had surgery.

"Recently, my daughter, Zahara, whom I adopted from Ethiopia, had surgery, and afterwards a nurse told me to call them if her skin 'turned pink,'" Jolie recalled about what is advice you'd give to someone much fairer than her child.
