Instagram: Booking Feature for Businesses


In March this year, when Instagram revealed that they reached 1 million advertisers, the social media platform also briefly shared plans that they going to be bringing a booking feature to the app. Instagram users will soon be able to book appointments using the photo sharing app. Bloomberg has reported that Salon appointments and restaurant table bookings could be set up by clicking on the business’ Instagram profile and using the new feature.

Lets say you want a haircut. A new “Book” option on your salon or barber’s Instagram profile page would let you choose the style of haircut and set a time and date for the appointment. You can see a video of the tool in action on Instagram’s blog post discussing their future business plans.


The video shows a pricing and payment function that tells you to pay at the Salon directly, however with the increasing use of Apple Pay and Paypal, it’s not hard to imagine payment functionality being added in the future.

It hasn’t been a secret that Instagram wishes to extend its ambition and functionality to make shopping a primary feature. The new addition of a booking feature is thus inevitably a logical extension. This would be the deepest level of interaction we’ve seen yet between users and business on the platform


Instagram has said “We plan to continue evolving Instagram business profiles” and there’s no doubt this will sustain a strong ROI for small and big businesses.

No longer will Instagram just be a platform to find indie and artistic coffee shops locally to yourself but a place you can order one too. It’s a savvy move for Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook Inc. in 2012. After all, the app is already used by around 8 million businesses.

The app's booking service is expected to launch in the next few months, Bloomberg reports.
